On April 6, 2026, a total of 450 nominations were submitted for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Coimbatore elections, scheduled for April 23. The last day of filing saw 278 candidates submitting their papers, with Thondamuthur and Coimbatore South leading the count at 77 and 61 nominations respectively.
Former AIADMK Minister S.P. Velumani, who filed his nomination from Thondamuthur, was accompanied by former BJP State president K. Annamalai. Velumani, declaring assets worth ₹1.36 crore in movable and ₹5.59 crore in immovable property, expressed confidence in winning by a one lakh vote margin, citing infrastructure advancements under his tenure.
DMK’s V. Senthilbalaji, contesting from Coimbatore elections South, emphasized the party’s achievements over the past five years and future plans. He declared assets of ₹1.12 crore in movable and ₹1.35 crore in immovable property, leading a significant procession to mark his nomination.
AIADMK’s Amman K. Arjunan highlighted the influx of independent candidates from Karur in Coimbatore South, attributing it to DMK’s fear of AIADMK’s growth-focused agenda, including the establishment of a jewellery park in Thondamuthur.
BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan, contesting from Coimbatore North, criticized the DMK government for corruption and failure to implement beneficial schemes like the Vishwakarma Scheme. Her assets include ₹2.16 crore in movable and ₹3.5 crore in immovable property.
With a total of 37 independent candidates in Coimbatore South and 49 in Thondamuthur, the elections are set to be fiercely contested, reflecting a microcosm of Tamil Nadu’s broader political dynamics.
