A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck several parts of Pakistan just after midnight on Sunday, August 3, 2025, prompting panic in cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and adjoining areas.

Details about 5.1 Magnitude Earthquake

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC), the tremors were felt at 12:10 AM, causing residents to rush outdoors in fear — many reciting prayers as aftershocks were anticipated. The quake’s epicenter was 15 km southeast of Rawat, with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which likely amplified the intensity of ground shaking.

Affected regions included:

  • Islamabad
  • Rawalpindi
  • Mardan
  • Murree
  • Haripur
  • Chakwal
  • Talagang
  • Kallar Kahar

No casualties or structural damage have been confirmed so far. However, authorities remain alert and have urged citizens to avoid poorly constructed buildings and follow basic earthquake safety protocols.

This tremor comes just a day after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake jolted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Azad Kashmir, and parts of Islamabad, with its epicenter located in the Hindukush Mountain region in Afghanistan at a depth of 102 kilometers.

Cities impacted during that earlier event included:

  • Peshawar
  • Swat
  • Nowshera
  • Charsadda
  • Lahore
  • Mirpur
  • And even parts of Tajikistan and Afghanistan

Pakistan, sitting on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, frequently experiences seismic activity. Experts warn that shallow quakes, like the recent one near Rawat, tend to be more dangerous even when the magnitude is moderate.

The NSMC continues to monitor the region for possible aftershocks and advises the public to remain cautious.
