On April 4, 2026, a devastating earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, resulting in the collapse of a house in Kabul and the tragic loss of eight lives. The National Disaster Management Authority confirmed the casualties and reported one child injured.

The earthquake, recorded at a depth of 177 kilometers by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), sent strong tremors across Kabul, Islamabad, and New Delhi. The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre confirmed the quake’s occurrence at 9:13 PM PST, with the epicenter located at latitude 36.48°N and longitude 70.84°E.

Residents in various regions of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad, experienced the tremors, though no significant damage was reported outside Afghanistan. In contrast, Afghanistan’s rugged terrain often exacerbates the impact of such natural disasters, with earthquakes being particularly lethal. Historically, earthquakes in the region have averaged 560 fatalities annually.

This latest seismic event follows a 5.8 magnitude quake in March that caused minor damage in eastern Afghanistan. The current situation underscores the ongoing vulnerability of Afghanistan to natural disasters. As the region continues to experience seismic activity, authorities remain vigilant in their monitoring and response efforts.
