On Sunday, August 24, 2025, 5 security men martyred, including three civilians, in clashes with militants across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The violence, involving the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), occurred in Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Hangu, Khyber, Bajaur, and North Waziristan, leaving seven policemen injured and seven terrorists dead.

Why This Matters

The resurgence of TTP-led violence in KP, bordering Afghanistan, underscores the persistent threat of terrorism in South Asia. The region’s porous borders and the Afghan Taliban’s 2021 takeover have emboldened militant groups, challenging Pakistan’s security and regional stability, with implications for counter-terrorism efforts across neighbouring countries.

Clashes Across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

In Upper Dir’s Dobando area, fierce clashes on Sunday night resulted in the deaths of five suspected TTP militants and two civilians caught in the crossfire. A senior Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) official reported that the bodies of the militants, possibly linked to Afghanistan, were in police custody. Seven policemen sustained injuries during the hours-long exchange. In Lower Dir’s Lajbook Dara, militants torched police vehicles, including two pick-up trucks and a car, though no casualties were reported. According to posts on X, the TTP claimed responsibility for seizing and destroying the vehicles. Police officials asserted control, with one officer stating, “We will never bow down to the mischief of the Kharijites.”

Bajaur and Jamrud Attacks

In Bajaur, Head Constable Shah Wazir Khan was martyred in militant firing on Monday, August 25, 2025. His funeral in Chansaruno Talash was attended by security officials and locals, with District Police Officer Abdul Salam Khalid vowing continued support for martyrs’ families. In Jamrud, Khyber district, policeman Khurshid Khan was killed in a shooting, potentially linked to a family feud, though investigations are ongoing [VERIFY: motive confirmation].

Hangu and Khyber Martyrs

In Hangu’s Tora Warai area, a late-night attack on a Frontier Constabulary (FC) fort martyred two scouts, with several others injured. Two militants were killed in the ensuing gunfight. In Tirah valley, Khyber, a terrorist attack on a security post resulted in the martyrdom of Lance Naik Ali Hasan Jan and Sepoy Nabi Jan. Security forces repelled the attackers, who fled, prompting a search operation. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur attended the Hangu martyrs’ funeral, with Naqvi praising the forces’ bravery against “Indian-sponsored terrorists”.

North Waziristan Quadcopter Strike

In Mir Ali, North Waziristan, a quadcopter strike on a house in Barokhel village on Monday martyred a two-year-old boy, Sahir Tufail, and injured his grandmother, who was shifted to Mir Ali hospital. The attack’s perpetrators remain unconfirmed, with local security sources and AP News reports indicating the strike’s origin has not been officially verified, as both militants and security forces have used quadcopters in the region.

Background for these 5 Security Men Martyred

Pakistan has faced a surge in terrorist activities in KP and Balochistan since the TTP ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022. The province accounted for 64% of terrorism-related fatalities in 2022, with 633 deaths. The TTP, allied with the Afghan Taliban, has exploited Afghanistan’s instability post-2021 to launch cross-border attacks, challenging Pakistan’s security apparatus. Operations like Zarb-e-Azb (2014) and Radd-ul-Fasaad (2017) reduced militant strongholds, but sleeper cells and cross-border sanctuaries persist. The merger of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with KP in 2018 aimed to strengthen governance but has faced resistance.

What’s Next

The Pakistani military and police are likely to intensify counter-terrorism operations in KP after 5 security men martyred, focusing on disrupting TTP networks. Enhanced border security and international cooperation with Afghanistan are critical to curbing cross-border militancy. The martyrdom of five security men highlights the ongoing sacrifices in Pakistan’s fight against terrorism, with the nation’s resolve to eliminate this threat remaining steadfast.
