India-Canada Relations: Both Countries have developed a collaborative work plan to address national security and law enforcement issues, focusing on drug trafficking and transnational criminal networks. This initiative was finalized during a meeting between India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Canada’s Nathalie Drouin in Ottawa on February 8, 2026.

The agreement marks a significant step towards normalizing relations after a diplomatic rift in 2023, following allegations by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the involvement of Indian agents in the killing of a Khalistani separatist. Both nations expelled diplomats and engaged in disputes over Khalistani activities and criminal gangs in Canada.

Efforts to rebuild ties began in late 2024, with both sides engaging in security dialogues. The recent meeting underscores a commitment to practical collaboration, including the appointment of security and law enforcement liaison officers to facilitate communication and information sharing on mutual concerns such as the illegal flow of drugs, particularly fentanyl precursors.

Moreover, India and Canada have agreed to enhance cooperation on cybersecurity policy and maintain discussions on fraud and immigration enforcement, aligning with domestic laws and international obligations. This strategic partnership is expected to strengthen bilateral communications and address shared security challenges.
