India-Malaysia relations: India and Malaysia have committed to enhancing their strategic partnership, focusing on key sectors such as trade, investment, defense, and technology. On February 8, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, emphasizing the importance of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The bilateral talks resulted in 11 agreements, including a significant framework for collaboration in the semiconductor sector. Both nations also agreed to promote the use of their local currencies, the Indian Rupee and Malaysian Ringgit, for trade settlements, marking a step towards economic transformation through strategic trust.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s firm stance on combating terrorism, stating, ‘Our message on terrorism is clear: no double standards, no compromise.’ This was echoed in a joint statement with Mr. Ibrahim, who acknowledged India’s economic growth and expressed a desire for deeper collaboration.
The leaders discussed regional and global issues, with Malaysia supporting India’s bid for permanent membership in a reformed United Nations Security Council. They also committed to strengthening cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and maritime security, expanding defense ties, and advancing partnerships in areas like AI, digital technologies, and food security.
Looking forward, India aims to enhance its relationship with ASEAN, with both countries agreeing to expedite the review of the ASEAN-India Trade Agreement. The growing friendship between India and Malaysia is seen as vital in addressing global challenges and promoting peace and stability.
