India-Bangladesh Ties: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended an invitation to Bangladesh’s newly appointed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit India. This invitation was conveyed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla during the swearing-in ceremony of Rahman’s government in Dhaka on February 17, 2026.

The ceremony was attended by several regional leaders, including Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal. Rahman, the son of former premier Khaleda Zia, faces the immediate challenges of stabilizing Bangladesh politically and economically after recent turmoil.

In his letter, Modi congratulated Rahman on his electoral victory and expressed a desire to enhance bilateral relations. He highlighted the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations, emphasizing shared history and cultural ties. Modi mentioned the potential for collaborative growth in areas such as trade, technology, and education.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also engaged with opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman, reaffirming India’s support for Bangladesh. The inclusion of Khalilur Rahman as Foreign Minister in Rahman’s cabinet signals a strategic approach to foreign affairs, given his experience in international diplomacy.

Looking ahead, Modi’s invitation is seen as a step towards strengthening regional cooperation and fostering mutual prosperity. The visit, when it occurs, could mark a significant milestone in India-Bangladesh relations.
