A tragic Karachi gas explosion in Gul-e-Rana Colony on February 20, 2026, resulted in the death of 16 individuals, including women and children, and injured 14 more. The explosion occurred around 4 a.m. during Sehri, near a private school, causing significant damage to nearby structures.
The building, a three-storey structure in Soldier Bazaar, collapsed due to a suspected gas leak or malfunctioning appliance, according to Dr. Abid, Chief Operating Officer of Rescue 1122. The narrow lanes of the colony hindered rescue operations, forcing teams to use traditional methods to locate survivors.
Local residents immediately joined rescue efforts, which were led by Nasrullah Abbasi, Deputy Commissioner of Karachi East. The operation lasted over eight hours, successfully recovering all missing persons. Officials confirmed the building was illegally constructed, leading to further investigations and legal actions.
Authorities have detained the building owner for questioning, and inspections are underway to ensure accountability. The incident highlights ongoing issues with gas safety and illegal constructions in Pakistan, raising concerns about future preventive measures.
