Bangladesh has formally requested the United Nations to delay its graduation from the least developed country (LDC) status by three years due to global economic instability and domestic challenges. This request comes ahead of a crucial meeting of the United Nations Committee for Development Policy in New York on February 24, where Bangladesh’s application will be assessed.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association supports the government’s move, emphasizing the need for strengthened diplomatic efforts to ensure international acceptance. Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, the association’s president, stated that diplomatic and trade policies must be aligned to maintain market access in major economies such as the European Union, United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

The request for delay arises from concerns over losing tariff benefits and the impact of global economic disruptions, including the Russia-Ukraine war and rising energy prices. Former BGMEA director Mohiuddin Rubel stressed the importance of coordinating diplomatic and trade strategies to navigate these challenges.

Bangladesh’s economic indicators, including per capita income and the human assets index, previously met the criteria for LDC graduation. However, recent economic pressures have prompted a reevaluation. The United Nations’ final decision is expected by September or October, following an initial assessment report and recommendations from the UN General Assembly.
