Pakistan Implements Nationwide Drone Ban Amid Security Concerns

Pakistan has enforced an immediate nationwide drone ban on the outdoor flying of drones and quadcopters due to security concerns. The Ministry of Interior issued this directive on February 27, mandating provincial authorities to ensure strict compliance.

The order, communicated to the chief secretaries of all provinces and the chief commissioner of Islamabad, emphasizes the need for vigilance in the current security environment. The ban will remain in effect until further notice, with authorities instructed to take immediate action against violators.

This decision follows a recent incident in Bannu, where a quadcopter drone dropped explosives on a mosque during iftar, injuring five worshippers. The attack has heightened security measures and prompted a crackdown on unauthorized drone usage.

Copies of the directive have been sent to key security and administrative officials, including the Inspectors General of Police and the Military Operations Directorate. The Counter Terrorism Department is investigating the Bannu attack to identify those responsible.

The ban is seen as a preventive measure to safeguard sensitive areas and public installations. Future discussions may focus on balancing security needs with technological advancements in UAV applications.
