The European Union has announced a new initiative to support media freedom in Pakistan, inviting proposals for projects aimed at enhancing freedom of expression. The deadline for concept notes is set for April 21, 2026.

This initiative seeks to bolster civil society efforts in a region where media freedom remains under pressure. The EU aims to fund projects that promote media professionalism, integrity, and pluralism, while also improving journalist safety through legal aid and psychosocial support.

The program places a strong emphasis on the digital information space, encouraging projects that address both online and offline freedom of expression. It also aims to counter cybercrimes, false accusations, hate speech, and disinformation through media literacy campaigns, especially in remote areas.

Applicants are urged to include youth participation in their proposals, considering Pakistan’s young population. Gender considerations are also crucial, as women, girls, and transgender communities face significant challenges in digital spaces.

Funding for this initiative totals nearly 2 million euros, with individual grants ranging from 400,000 to 650,000 euros. Projects are expected to run for 36 to 48 months, with applications submitted via the EU’s PROSPECT system. An information session is scheduled for March 26 in Islamabad.
