India and Neighbours Advocate for Maritime Security and International Laws

On March 7, 2026, India and its Indian Ocean neighbours expressed strong support for regional frameworks to ensure maritime security and uphold international laws. This comes in the wake of a US submarine sinking the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena off the Sri Lankan coast on March 4.

Regional Cooperation and Maritime Security in the Indian Ocean

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, along with counterparts from Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and Seychelles, highlighted the importance of international laws, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), during the Raisina Dialogue focused on the Indian Ocean’s future.

The incident has raised concerns about the potential expansion of the West Asian conflict into the Indian Ocean, a critical strategic area for India. The Iranian vessel was leaving after participating in an International Fleet Review hosted by India.

Jaishankar revealed that India had permitted the Iranian warship IRIS Lavan to dock at Kochi on March 4 after receiving a request on February 28. The ship’s crew, including young cadets, have been accommodated onshore.

In his response, Jaishankar emphasized India’s role as a ‘net security provider’ in the region, while acknowledging the presence of external powers like the US and China. He stressed the need for adherence to international laws to maintain peace and stability.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath also underscored the importance of UNCLOS, stating that Sri Lanka acted in accordance with international laws during the incident. He highlighted the need for regional cooperation to address maritime challenges.

The Indian Ocean region, with its strategic importance, remains a focal point for international powers. As tensions rise, India and its neighbours continue to advocate for legal frameworks and cooperation to ensure security and stability in these waters.
