West Asia Conflict China Calls for U.S. to Address Differences

China Criticizes Military Escalation in the West Asia Conflict

On March 8, 2026, China’s leading diplomat, Wang Yi, criticized the ongoing West Asia conflict and called on the United States to resolve its differences with Beijing. This statement was made during a press conference in Beijing, coinciding with China’s annual political event, the Two Sessions.

The conflict, which erupted due to U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran, was described by Wang Yi as a situation that “should never have happened.” He emphasized that “a strong fist does not mean strong reason,” advocating for a world governed by diplomacy rather than force.

The Two Sessions, a significant political event in China, is closely observed for insights into the country’s geopolitical strategies, especially as tensions with the United States and regional conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine continue to unfold.

Wang Yi highlighted the importance of 2026 for Sino-U.S. relations, which have been strained since Donald Trump resumed the U.S. presidency. The trade war that ensued has seen both nations imposing tariffs on each other’s goods.

Despite Beijing’s condemnation of U.S. and Israeli actions in Iran, particularly the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Wang Yi stressed the necessity for both nations to “make careful preparations, create a suitable environment, manage existing differences, and eliminate unnecessary interference.”

He also reaffirmed China’s steadfast relations with Russia, despite Western criticism linking these ties to the ongoing war in Ukraine. “Amidst the turbulent and complex international environment, China-Russia relations remain steadfast and unshakable,” Wang Yi stated.
