Bangladesh-Japan EPA: A New Era of Economic Partnership

Bangladesh-Japan EPA: On March 16, 2026, Bangladesh’s strategic economic landscape witnessed a pivotal moment with the implementation of the Bangladesh–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). This landmark agreement aims to enhance trade, attract investment, and support industrial growth, marking a significant milestone in Bangladesh-Japan relations.

During a seminar organized by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh, experts emphasized the necessity of coordinated policy reforms and institutional strengthening to fully realize the EPA’s benefits. The seminar gathered policymakers, diplomats, and industry leaders to discuss the potential of the EPA in transforming Bangladesh’s economy as it approaches graduation from least developed country (LDC) status.

Saida Shinichi, Japan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, highlighted the comprehensive nature of the EPA, which extends beyond tariff reductions to include trade facilitation and investment rules. He expressed optimism that the agreement would bolster Japanese investment and fortify Bangladesh’s industrial base.

Fahmida Khatun, Executive Director of CPD, stressed the importance of a coordinated policy roadmap focusing on trade facilitation and industrial upgrading. She noted that effective implementation of such policies would be crucial for Bangladesh to transition beyond traditional development cooperation.

Experts like Kenichi Ohno and Owais Parray underscored the role of strong institutions and policy coordination in achieving industrial transformation. The seminar also highlighted the need for export diversification beyond the garment sector, with investments in sectors like automobiles, electronics, and ICT.

As Bangladesh prepares for its post-LDC era, the EPA is seen as a catalyst for sustained economic growth through enhanced trade and investment cooperation. The agreement provides a framework for improving the business environment, which is essential for maintaining competitiveness in global markets.
