The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a record prize pool of $8.8 million for this year’s Women’s Twenty20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in England and Wales starting June 12, 2026. The winners are set to earn $2.3 million, reflecting the growing investment in women’s cricket.
The 12-team competition will see New Zealand defending their maiden title won in 2024. The runners-up will receive $1.17 million, while both losing semi-finalists will earn $675,000 each. Every participating team is guaranteed a minimum prize of $248,000, according to the ICC’s statement.
Despite the increase, the prize pool remains smaller than those of recent men’s and women’s World Cups held in the Indian subcontinent. Last year’s 50-over Women’s World Cup in India and Sri Lanka had a $13.9 million prize pool, with champions India taking home $4.5 million. The 2023 men’s 50-over World Cup in India had a $10 million prize pot.
The ICC’s CEO, Sanjog Gupta, emphasized that the continued rise of women’s cricket through increased investment and opportunity reflects the growing influence and impact of female athletes on the global stage. This year’s prize pool marks a significant milestone in promoting gender equality in sports.
Looking ahead, the Women’s T20 World Cup is expected to further elevate the profile of women’s cricket, with increased viewership and sponsorship opportunities on the horizon. The tournament promises to be a landmark event, showcasing the talents of female cricketers and setting new standards for future competitions.
