Himanta Biswa Sarma was appointed the Chief Minister of Assam on May 10, 2026, following unanimous support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF). The decision was made during a meeting at the BJP state headquarters in Guwahati, attended by Union Minister JP Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

All 82 BJP legislators elected Sarma as their leader, with his nomination proposed by eight MLAs, including Ranjeet Kumar Dass and Ashok Singhal. The AGP and BPF, contributing 20 MLAs, also endorsed Sarma’s leadership, with AGP President Atul Bora and Rihon Daimary proposing his name.

The BJP secured 82 of the 126 Assembly seats, achieving an absolute majority, while AGP and BPF each won 10 seats, culminating in a combined total of 102 MLAs. Sarma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders, promising dedicated efforts for Assam’s development.

Sarma, who first assumed the chief minister’s role on May 10, 2021, is set to continue his leadership with a swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 12, 2026, in Guwahati. The event will be attended by Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other dignitaries, with preparations underway to accommodate a large audience.

This political transition marks the third consecutive term for the BJP-led government in Assam, reflecting the party’s strong foothold in the region. The focus now shifts to fulfilling electoral promises and advancing Assam’s growth trajectory.
