In a pivotal move, Imran Khan, the incarcerated founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai, chairman of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. Announced on 20 August 2025, this decision, coupled with the nomination of Senator Azam Swati for the same role in the Senate, underscores Imran Khan’s intent to fortify the opposition’s stance amidst a turbulent political landscape in Pakistan.

Reshaping Opposition Leadership

Mahmood Achakzai’s nomination as opposition leader in the National Assembly marks a strategic shift for PTI, especially following the disqualification of Omar Ayub Khan by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) earlier this month. PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja, speaking to journalists outside the Supreme Court in Islamabad, confirmed that Khan, from Adiala Jail, selected Achakzai, the current head of the Tehreek-i-Tahaffuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) alliance, to lead the opposition in the lower house. Concurrently, Azam Swati’s nomination for the Senate role aims to strengthen PTI’s parliamentary influence.

The ECP’s decision to disqualify Ayub and Shibli Faraz, the former Senate opposition leader, stemmed from their convictions in cases linked to the May 9, 2023, protests, which erupted after Khan’s arrest. These events, marked by widespread unrest, led to the formal removal of both leaders on 8 August. Imran Khan’s swift response in nominating Achakzai and Swati reflects PTI’s determination to maintain its political momentum despite legal and institutional challenges.

Navigating Legal and Political Hurdles

The path to new opposition leadership is fraught with complexities. The Peshawar High Court recently issued a stay order on the appointments of new opposition leaders in both the National Assembly and the Senate, following petitions by Ayub and Faraz challenging their disqualifications. The court has sought the ECP’s response, with hearings ongoing to assess whether the disqualifications, based on convictions under Article 63(1)(g) of the Constitution, hold legal merit. PTI contends that these actions are politically motivated, aimed at undermining its parliamentary presence.

Raja also revealed that Khan has entrusted PTI’s political committee with decisions regarding by-elections for seats vacated due to recent convictions. A meeting scheduled for 20 August was set to address this, highlighting the party’s proactive approach to sustaining its influence. Additionally, Khan requested five names for the opposition leader role in the Punjab Assembly, indicating a broader restructuring of PTI’s leadership across provincial and national levels.

Strengthening the TTAP Alliance

Achakzai’s nomination aligns with PTI’s strategy to leverage the TTAP, a coalition of six opposition parties formed to advocate for constitutional supremacy and democratic reforms. Achakzai, a veteran politician known for his principled stance, was appointed TTAP chairman in July 2025, with PTI’s Asad Qaiser as secretary-general. The alliance has gained traction, particularly after a multi-party conference earlier this month, which called for a new social contract to restore Pakistan’s democratic framework.

The TTAP’s commitment to supporting anti-government protests and its focus on constitutional integrity position Achakzai as a formidable opposition leader. His leadership is expected to unify the coalition’s efforts in challenging the ruling coalition, led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), on critical issues such as electoral transparency and governance.

A Defining Moment for Pakistan’s Opposition

As Pakistan grapples with political instability, Imran Khan’s nomination of Mahmood Achakzai as opposition leader in the National Assembly, alongside Azam Swati in the Senate, signals a renewed push for opposition unity. Achakzai’s reputation as a staunch defender of constitutional values, combined with PTI’s resilient political strategy, sets the stage for a robust challenge to the government. With legal battles ongoing and the TTAP gaining momentum, the opposition’s ability to navigate these challenges will shape Pakistan’s political future. Khan’s vision, articulated through Achakzai’s leadership, underscores a commitment to restoring democratic principles, making this a defining moment for the opposition leader and Pakistan’s parliamentary democracy.
