Afghanistan Launches Solar Power Initiative in Logar Province

Afghanistan has initiated a significant step toward energy self-sufficiency with the launch of a 40-megawatt solar power project in Mohammad Agha District, Logar Province. Valued at $28 million, the project includes a solar power plant and a $7.6 million 126 MVA substation with transmission lines, aimed at powering approximately 40,000 households and the Mohammad Agha Industrial Park. Construction, expected to take 18 months, marks a key effort to reduce Afghanistan’s reliance on imported electricity, which costs the country hundreds of millions annually.

The project aligns with broader plans to tap into Afghanistan’s vast renewable energy potential, estimated at over 300,000 megawatts, with solar accounting for two-thirds due to the country’s 300 sunny days per year. Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar emphasized the project’s role in boosting local economies and creating jobs. The initiative follows similar renewable energy projects in Nangarhar, Laghman, and Balkh provinces, reflecting a national push for sustainable development. Private sector involvement, led by companies like Bayat Power, supports workforce training and technology transfer to ensure long-term viability.
