India’s Hosur Forest Division has implemented an advanced project for forest fire management with technology, in collaboration with WWF-India and Microsoft. The initiative, known as ‘Tech for Conservation,’ utilizes geospatial and artificial intelligence techniques to predict forest fires in areas prone to such incidents.
The project, led by Dr. G. Areendran, Director of Tech for Conservation, has been applied across several Indian states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and Karnataka. These regions were selected based on their ecological importance and historical fire occurrences. A comprehensive GIS-based analytical framework was developed, integrating 13 years of historical data, topographic parameters, climatic variables, and human factors to create predictive models.
In the Hosur Forest Division, analysis of fire hotspots from the January to April fire season between 2012 and 2025 revealed shifting patterns of fire activity. The 2025 data indicated new and sporadic hotspots, as well as areas with fluctuating fire occurrences. The study highlighted an oscillating cold-spot for 2025, underscoring dynamic changes in fire patterns.
The core of this study involved machine learning and deep learning methodologies, which were trained on historical data to produce future forest fire susceptibility maps. These maps categorize regions by fire risk and are accessible through an interactive dashboard designed to support decision-making, enhance early warning systems, and improve long-term conservation planning.
A recent meeting organized by WWF-India and the Hosur Forest Division involved forest staff, NGO members, and local leaders to discuss fire management strategies. The meeting, attended by over 70 participants, was guided by key figures including Dr. Areendran and other forest officials.
