The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is conducting an in-depth investigation into last year’s tragic crash of Air India flight AI171. The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, resulting in the deaths of 260 individuals, including 241 passengers.

The investigation is examining various components of the aircraft, with a focus on technical, operational, organizational, and human factors. The AAIB is employing the theory of elimination and the SHELL model, which scrutinizes Software, Hardware, Environment, and Liveware, to determine the probable cause of the crash.

A source indicated that the probe might be leaning towards deliberate pilot action as a potential cause. Preliminary findings revealed that the fuel supply to both engines was cut off within a second, causing cockpit confusion. Audio recordings captured one pilot questioning the other’s action, with denial from the latter.

The Supreme Court criticized the selective release of preliminary reports, which suggested pilot lapses, leading to media speculation. In response, Pushkaraj Sabharwal, father of one of the pilots, urged a formal investigation, countering rumors of psychological distress influencing the incident.

As the investigation progresses, all possibilities remain open, with the AAIB committed to uncovering the truth behind this tragedy. Further updates are anticipated as more evidence comes to light.
