Air India Reduces West Asia Flights Amid Middle East Tensions

Air India has significantly reduced its flight operations to West Asia, canceling approximately 2,500 flights over the past three weeks due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. This reduction has left the airline operating at only 30% of its usual capacity in the region, as confirmed by CEO Campbell Wilson in a communication to employees on March 22, 2026.

Wilson highlighted the severe impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on Air India’s operations, stating that the airline’s usual scale of operations to and through the region has been significantly disrupted. The closures of airports and airspace, deemed unsafe, have necessitated these cancellations.

The financial repercussions are already being felt, with jet fuel prices more than doubling. Wilson noted that most of the financial impact will manifest in the coming month. In response, Air India has introduced a fuel surcharge on new tickets to help mitigate rising costs.

Wilson also pointed out that flights to destinations such as the UK, Europe, and North America are being rerouted, resulting in increased fuel consumption and longer travel times. Despite these challenges, the airline is identifying new demand in markets like Europe and North America, where additional flights are being deployed.

Looking forward, Wilson emphasized the need for Air India to adapt to fluctuating fuel costs, airfares, and customer demand. He stressed the importance of maintaining safe operations, controlling unnecessary expenditures, and supporting staff, particularly those in the affected Middle East region. The airline’s network and schedules remain volatile, but the commitment to safety and service continues to be a priority.
