The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has intensified its efforts to clear illegal structures along rivers and streams, with the ongoing anti-encroachment drive gaining momentum across the province. Prompted by a tragic incident in Swat, where floodwaters claimed over a dozen lives, authorities are targeting unauthorized constructions along riverbanks to mitigate flood risks and protect public safety.

In Swat, the operation has seen significant progress, with over 40 illegal structures demolished along the Swat River. The campaign extends to other regions, including Lower Dir and Battagram, where district administrations are removing encroachments along the Panjkora River and other waterways. The KP government has directed officials to act impartially, ensuring no individual, regardless of influence, is spared from the enforcement.

The drive follows a directive from Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, emphasizing the need to safeguard lives and infrastructure from recurring flood threats. Recent posts on X highlight the government’s resolve, noting that district commissioners are required to submit geo-tagged evidence of cleared sites within a stipulated timeframe. The operation also includes mapping and demarcating riverbanks to prevent future encroachments.

However, the campaign has faced challenges. In Swat, hotel and restaurant owners have protested, alleging selective enforcement, particularly after the partial demolition of a property linked to a prominent political figure. Authorities maintain that the operation remains unbiased and will continue until all illegal structures are removed. The Peshawar High Court has also intervened, ordering a detailed report on the Swat tragedy and urging officials to overcome obstacles in the anti-encroachment efforts.

The KP government has imposed a ban on mining activities along riverbeds and sealed several stone-crushing plants in areas like Salarzai tehsil to support the initiative. As the anti-encroachment drive continues across KP, the focus remains on ensuring safer waterways and reducing the risks posed by unauthorized constructions.
