In Afghanistan, residents are grappling with a significant increase in Badakhshan fuel prices as of January 27, 2026. The cost of essential fuel materials, including firewood cost increase, has risen sharply compared to previous years, creating a financial burden for many.

Local resident Farid reports that the price of 7kg of firewood, which was previously available for 80 to 90 Afghanis, has now surged to 120 Afghanis. This sharp increase has made it increasingly difficult for residents to afford basic heating materials amidst the harsh winter conditions.

Vendors attribute the price hike to escalating costs of wood, exacerbated by transportation and rental expenses. Dad Mohammad, a local firewood seller, explained that these added costs leave minimal profit margins.

Local authorities have attempted to mitigate these economic pressures by issuing official price lists aimed at controlling the rising cost of fuel and food. Samaruddin Rahmani, a member of Badakhshan’s pricing committee, noted that while winter typically sees an increase in fuel prices, the current situation is aggravated by external factors.

The economic strain is further compounded by frequent power outages in the region, adding to the residents’ challenges. As Badakhshan continues to navigate these difficulties, the local government and vendors are striving to find sustainable solutions to stabilize fuel prices.
