A high-level delegation from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, met with representatives of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Beijing on June 23, 2025. The meeting, held at the Great Hall of the People, focused on strengthening diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and China while emphasizing the importance of transparent elections in Bangladesh.

Li Hongzhong, a senior CPC official and vice chairman of China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, expressed hopes for free and fair polls in Bangladesh, scheduled for April 2025. He highlighted the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, noting 2025 as a year of cultural and people-to-people exchanges. The CPC reiterated its commitment to fostering cooperative relations with Bangladesh’s major political parties, including the BNP, to promote regional stability.

The BNP delegation briefed the CPC on Bangladesh’s current political landscape, including preparations for the upcoming national election and the party’s push for reforms. Posts on X indicate that BNP leaders emphasized their commitment to ensuring a level playing field in the electoral process, aligning with China’s expressed interest in fair governance. The discussions also touched on potential economic collaboration, with China showing interest in deepening trade ties under its Belt and Road Initiative, of which Bangladesh is a partner.

This meeting follows recent diplomatic engagements, including a trilateral dialogue in Kunming involving Bangladesh, China, and Pakistan, aimed at enhancing regional cooperation. As Bangladesh navigates its political transition under interim leader Muhammad Yunus, China’s engagement with the BNP signals its intent to maintain balanced relations with all key stakeholders in Dhaka.

The dialogue underscores the growing partnership between Bangladesh and China, with both sides aiming to advance mutual interests in diplomacy, trade, and governance.
