The Bangladesh government is set to launch a Tk 7,340 crore project to construct robust flood control embankments along the Muhuri, Kohua, and Silonia rivers in Feni, aiming to address the region’s recurring flood challenges. This initiative, led by the Bangladesh Army, will focus on building high-quality, durable embankments to protect vulnerable communities in Fulgazi, Parshuram, Chhagalnaiya, and Feni Sadar upazilas, where recent floods have submerged over 30 villages, affecting nearly 40,000 people.
Heavy rainfall and upstream water flow from India have repeatedly breached existing embankments, causing significant damage to homes, crops, and fisheries. For instance, recent reports indicate losses of over 1,000 fish enclosures and 1,655 hectares of Aman seedbeds, with the livestock sector in Parshuram, Fulgazi, and Chhagalnaiya facing damages worth Tk 6.49 crore. The proposed project will incorporate advanced technical expertise to ensure long-term flood resilience, replacing inadequate structures that have failed to withstand intense monsoon rains.
Local authorities have already taken emergency measures, including opening 131 school shelters for displaced residents and distributing relief worth Tk 6.5 lakh, alongside 400 food packets. Over 2,500 volunteers are on standby to assist with rescue and recovery efforts. However, residents like those in Uttar Sreepur and Chitholia emphasize the need for sustainable solutions, as temporary repairs have proven insufficient against the annual deluge.
Posts on X reflect public concern, highlighting the urgency of the situation with reports of 439 mm of rainfall in 24 hours and ongoing power outages in affected areas. The government’s plan signals a commitment to addressing these challenges, with a focus on protecting lives and livelihoods in Feni’s flood-prone regions.
