Bangladesh US Wheat Import Tariff Relief Talks Advance

Bangladesh has finalized a deal of 220,000 metric tons of wheat import from the United States at $302.75 per ton, under a government-to-government agreement brokered via a Singapore-based trading firm. Announced on July 30, 2025, the move is seen as part of Bangladesh’s broader effort to ease trade tensions, especially with the US preparing to impose a 35% tariff on Bangladeshi garment exports starting August 1, 2025.

Details of Wheat Import Agreement

This follows a landmark agreement from July 2025, where Bangladesh committed to importing 700,000 metric tons of US wheat annually for five years—a significant diversification away from traditional suppliers in the Black Sea region.

Though US wheat typically costs $30–$40 more per ton than alternatives, its higher protein and gluten content make it highly suitable for premium flour production. It is expected to compete directly with Canadian wheat in Bangladesh’s commercial and consumer markets.

On social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), users and trade analysts have noted the strategic benefits of diversifying food imports while also reinforcing bilateral ties. Many see this as a calculated move to cushion Bangladesh’s vital $6 billion garment industry from punitive trade measures by the US.

This wheat deal is part of a broader US-Bangladesh trade reset. In recent months, Bangladesh has also ramped up cotton and soybean imports from the US and placed an order for 25 Boeing aircraft, indicating goodwill and mutual interest. Currently, a Bangladeshi trade delegation is in the US negotiating further tariff relief and long-term trade facilitation.
