The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has intensified security measures at the Jessore border in response to rising fears of fuel smuggling, prompted by escalating fuel prices due to the ongoing Middle East conflict. The measures, announced on March 6, 2026, include increased personnel, intensified patrols, and enhanced search operations.

According to a press release from the Jessore Battalion (49 BGB), special surveillance has been launched across key areas under their jurisdiction. Additional BGB members have been deployed at the Benapole land port and the Sharsha and Chougaccha border points. The operations include setting up temporary checkpoints to inspect vehicles, with a focus on areas previously targeted for diesel and petrol smuggling.

Lt Col Saifullah Siddique, commander of the Jessore 49 BGB Battalion, emphasized that the personnel increase is aimed at maintaining strict monitoring over suspicious movements and transport. ‘BGB members are on maximum alert to prevent any fuel smuggling. We will safeguard the country’s fuel resources and take strict legal action against those involved in smuggling,’ he stated.

The fear of a fuel shortage has led to increased demand at fuel pumps in Jessore, causing long lines and depleting reserves faster than anticipated. Pump officials have indicated that while reserves might last until Sunday, the heightened demand could lead to a local shortage sooner.

As the situation evolves, the BGB’s actions are expected to play a critical role in maintaining stability in the region. The ongoing surveillance and patrols will be crucial in preventing smuggling and ensuring the security of fuel supplies.
