Britain and India to Sign Landmark Free Trade Pact During Modi Visit

On July 24, 2025, Britain and India will formalize a significant free trade agreement during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to London. This deal, finalized after three years of negotiations, aims to boost bilateral trade by £25.5 billion ($34 billion) by 2040, benefiting the world’s fifth and sixth largest economies. The agreement, set to be signed during Modi’s fourth UK visit since 2014, will reduce tariffs on goods like textiles, whisky, and cars, enhancing market access for businesses in both nations.

Under the pact, India will lower tariffs on British cars from over 100% to 10% under a quota system, while Scotch whisky tariffs will drop from 150% to 75% immediately, and to 40% over the next decade. In return, 99% of Indian exports, including leather goods and garments, will gain duty-free access to the UK, with Britain seeing tariff reductions on 90% of its exports. The agreement also facilitates easier mobility for temporary business visitors and exempts workers from dual social security contributions during postings abroad. British firms will gain access to India’s government procurement market, particularly in clean energy and infrastructure, though India’s request for an exemption from Britain’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism was not granted.

The deal, hailed as Britain’s most significant trade agreement since leaving the EU in 2020, awaits ratification by both the British parliament and India’s federal cabinet, with implementation expected by mid-2026. Alongside the trade pact, Modi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will sign a strategic partnership to deepen cooperation in defense, climate, and crime prevention. Posts on X reflect optimism about the deal’s potential to create jobs and strengthen economic ties, though some note its modest projected boost of £4.8 billion annually to Britain’s £2.6 trillion GDP by 2040. This agreement marks a step toward reinforcing India-UK relations amid global trade uncertainties.
