Punjab’s cotton harvest has reached 609,000 bales by July 31, 2025, doubling the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association’s (PCGA) estimate of 301,000 bales, igniting both optimism and debate. The Agriculture Department credits early planting on 781,000 acres and a total sown area of 3.16 million acres, supported by robust field services, university involvement, and a strong cotton campaign.
Modern Cotton Harvest in Multan
“We’re finally seeing progress,” said Khalid, a farmer in Multan, hopeful for better earnings. The department’s Crop Reporting Service, using GPS-enabled tools and FAO-endorsed methods, claims a record yield. However, the PCGA argues only cotton reaching ginning factories counts, highlighting discrepancies. A farmer noted, “Numbers don’t match, but my fields are thriving.”
Climate Change Effects on Cotton
Despite the success, challenges loom. Climate change and past floods have hurt yields, and farmers demand stable prices. With textiles driving Pakistan’s economy, this cotton harvest offers a lifeline, but aligning data and ensuring fair returns remain critical.
