On July 6, 2025, the Shia Muslim community in Dhaka observed Holy Ashura with a solemn Tajia procession, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The procession, a centuries-old tradition, began at 10:00 AM from the historic Imambara Hussaini Dalan in Old Dhaka and proceeded through key city routes, including Azimpur, Nilkhet, New Market, Science Laboratory, and Jigatola, concluding at Dhanmondi Lake Karbala by 2:00 PM.

The event, marked by deep religious reverence, saw participants walking barefoot, chanting “Hai Hussain, Hai Hussain,” and carrying flags and banners symbolizing the Karbala tragedy. The procession included recitations of Nowha, expressions of grief for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his 72 followers, who sacrificed their lives for justice and righteousness in the Hijri year 61.

To ensure public safety, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) implemented stringent security measures. The area surrounding Hussaini Dalan was fortified with CCTV surveillance, archways, and metal detectors, with participants undergoing thorough searches before joining. The DMP banned sharp objects such as knives, swords, and spears, as well as firecrackers, citing risks to public safety. Additional police and specialized units were deployed along the procession route, with traffic management plans in place to maintain order. The measures reflect heightened vigilance following past incidents, including a 2015 bomb attack near Hussaini Dalan, which underscored the need for robust security during Ashura observances.

The day, a public holiday in Bangladesh, was marked by other religious activities, including special prayers and gatherings at mosques like Baitul Mukarram, where the Islamic Foundation organized programs highlighting Ashura’s significance. President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued messages honoring the martyrs of Karbala, emphasizing the day’s importance as a symbol of resistance against injustice.

Posts on X reflected a mix of sentiments, with some users sharing images of the procession and others noting the heavy police presence, underscoring the balance between religious expression and public safety. The observance of Holy Ashura in Dhaka remains a poignant reminder of sacrifice, unity, and resilience for the Shia community and beyond.
