Elbridge Colby, a top US defense official, is scheduled to visit India at the end of March to enhance India-US defense relations following recent diplomatic tensions. Colby, serving as Undersecretary of War for Policy, is a pivotal figure in US defense policy under Trump’s administration.
During the visit, New Delhi and Washington will discuss accelerating pending defense acquisitions and consider reviving forums like INDUS-X, which previously bolstered ties between American and Indian defense companies. The visit follows closely after those of senior US military officials, including Indo-Pacific Commander Admiral Samuel Paparo.
The meeting comes at a crucial time as the war in West Asia disrupts supply lines for essential products like crude oil, gas, and fertilizers, affecting India and other Asian countries. The recent conclusion of a framework agreement on trade has paved the way for broader improvements in bilateral ties.
The main focus of Colby’s visit will be defense. Both countries seek a political direction to emerge from the meetings, aiming to set the course for their defense partnership. While the US is expected to push for greater military sales, India will advocate for more co-production and local manufacturing of defense equipment.
The India-US defense partnership has progressed despite broader tensions, such as trade disagreements and India’s purchases of Russian energy. In October, a 10-year defense framework was signed to deepen security ties in the Indo-Pacific region. Colby’s visit signals the Pentagon’s commitment to US-India defense collaboration.
