EU Appeals to India for Pressure on Russia Amid Ukraine Conflict: The European Union has called upon India to exert pressure on Russia to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This appeal was made by European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas during her diplomatic visit to India for the 16th India-EU Summit on January 24, 2026. Kallas emphasized that the war, which has persisted for nearly four years, is detrimental to global trade and stability, particularly affecting southern countries due to disruptions in wheat trade.
Kallas, speaking after the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between India and the EU, accused Russia of engaging in deceptive negotiation tactics. She urged India to leverage its influence over Russia to promote peace, highlighting the shared interest of both Europe and India in ending the conflict.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri responded by affirming India’s desire for a swift resolution to the conflict. He reiterated India’s historical ties with Russia but emphasized India’s commitment to a negotiated settlement. Misri noted that Prime Minister Modi has been actively engaged with leaders from both Russia and Ukraine, advocating for dialogue and offering India’s support in achieving a peaceful outcome.
The conflict, which began in February 2022, has seen various international efforts to mediate, though Russia’s territorial demands remain a significant obstacle. With the new trade agreement, India and the EU are poised to strengthen economic ties, potentially influencing diplomatic dynamics. The global community watches closely as India balances its strategic partnerships while advocating for peace.
