Kandahar, 3 August 2025 – A new Floodwater Threat Prevention Project Launched in Kandahar City has begun, aimed at protecting residents in the old-city area of the 6th district from recurrent flood damage, officials say.
Residents in this part of Kandahar city have faced financial losses annually due to mountain floodwaters overwhelming homes. Wali Ahmad shared that “Three times during the winter season, floodwaters have entered our house, causing us financial damage.” Another resident, Abdullah, added that the lack of municipal attention has left homes vulnerable to slippery mountain water. Abdul Razzaq echoed this, saying rebuilding canals, drains and flood pathways would offer significant relief.
Steps Taken from the Authorities on Floodwater Threat Prevention
The municipality has earmarked 14 million Afghanis for this four-month project. It covers reconstruction of 5,000 cubic metres of urban sewage lines, canals and drainage channels. Municipality spokesman Saifullah Asim explained that the goal is to prevent floodwaters from entering the city, while the project engineer Mohebullah noted that eliminating blockages in the sewage system remains a priority.
Every year, financial loss due to inadequate drainage systems affects families across Kandahar, but officials insist this new measure is a concrete step in protecting livelihoods and infrastructure. The Floodwater Threat Prevention Project Launched in Kandahar City is expected to offer a more resilient urban drainage system for the future.
