The investigation into the Abu Sayed murder, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, has revealed significant findings. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) probe agency submitted its final report on June 24, 2025, identifying 30 individuals, including police personnel, as involved in the killing. Abu Sayed was fatally shot on July 16, 2024, during clashes between police and protesters in front of the university, amid the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The report, presented to the ICT prosecution, details the circumstances of the incident, which occurred during a period of intense civil unrest. Video evidence circulating on social media platforms, including posts on X, shows police firing at Abu Sayed, who appeared to pose no immediate threat. Despite initial police claims denying responsibility, the ICT’s findings contradict these assertions, pointing to direct involvement of law enforcement. Formal charges are expected to be filed at ICT-2 on June 26, 2025.

The case, initiated by a complaint from Abu Sayed’s brother, Ramzan Ali, originally named former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 23 others. The investigation’s scope has since expanded, reflecting the complexity of the incident. Four individuals, including two police officers, were previously brought into ICT custody, some already detained in related cases.

This development has sparked widespread discussion, with social media posts on X highlighting public outrage over the incident and demands for accountability. The Abu Sayed murder case underscores ongoing concerns about police conduct and justice during Bangladesh’s recent protests.
