In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, hopes for a massive Imran Khan-led protest call by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) fizzled out on August 6, 2025, as police swiftly arrested dozens of supporters, including women, in the twin cities. The PTI’s call for nationwide rallies to demand the release of their jailed leader, Imran Khan, drew only small, scattered groups waving party flags before dispersing under heavy security.

State Crackdown after Protest Call

The crackdown was intense, with over 2,500 police officers patrolling Islamabad, equipped with Safe City cameras to spot gatherings. In areas like F-6 and Aabpara Market, PTI supporters, some with young children, faced arrests, with reports of minors crying as police detained their parents. A PTI worker shared on X their anguish over harsh treatment, claiming peaceful protesters were targeted unfairly. Most detainees were released after hours, but the heavy-handed response left many disheartened.

Despite PTI’s Islamabad Region President Aamir Mughal announcing a grand rally from Zero Point to F-9 Park, no significant gathering materialized. In Rawalpindi, only a few protesters appeared at key spots, overshadowed by Section 144, which banned public assemblies across Punjab until August 10. Authorities cited security risks, warning that protests could be exploited by troublemakers.

PTI Leaders over Protest Call

A senior PTI leader told that the lackluster turnout stemmed from workers’ loyalty to Imran Khan’s direct calls and the fear of arrests, with many local leaders in hiding or abroad. Posts on X echoed this frustration, with some users questioning the party’s strategy and others blaming government surveillance for stifling dissent.

Response of Twin Cities

For now, the twin cities remain calm but tense, as PTI’s push for Imran Khan’s release struggles to gain momentum against a resolute state response. The fight for Imran Khan’s freedom continues, but the path forward looks uncertain.
