India Climate Roadmap: India has announced a significant upgrade to its nationally determined contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement for the period 2031-2035, setting ambitious climate goals. On March 25, 2026, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed three key pledges aimed at reducing emissions and boosting clean energy.
The new targets of the India Climate Roadmap include a 47% reduction in emissions intensity, ensuring that 60% of India’s total electricity capacity is sourced from non-fossil fuels by 2035, and creating a carbon sink of 3.5 to 4 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent. These commitments surpass India’s previous 2030 goals, which included a 45% emissions intensity reduction and 50% non-fossil fuel electricity capacity.
India’s proactive approach has already seen it achieve its 2030 target of 50% non-fossil fuel capacity five years ahead of schedule, prompting an elevation of targets for the next decade. The updated climate action plan underscores India’s dedication to sustainable development and combating climate change.
The roadmap for 2035 also emphasizes climate-friendly economic development, resilient infrastructure, and mobilizing low-cost finance for cutting-edge climate technologies. As India continues to lead in global climate efforts, these initiatives are expected to have far-reaching impacts on both national and international levels.
