India Climate Vision: India has set ambitious climate goals, aiming to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2070, according to Bhupender Yadav, India’s Union Environment Minister. Speaking at the World Sustainable Development Summit organized by The Energy and Resources Institute on February 25, 2026, Yadav emphasized the need for a global vision to support this transformation.

Yadav highlighted the necessity of tripling renewable energy globally, doubling energy efficiency, and scaling adaptation finance to match mitigation efforts. He stressed the importance of reforming multilateral development banks to unlock trillions in climate finance, stating, ‘Climate ambition and climate finance must advance together.’

The minister noted that the first Global Stocktake at COP28 in Dubai in 2023 made it clear that the world is not on track to limit global warming to 1.5°C. He described the situation as a crisis of scale, speed, and systemic alignment, urging a transformation beyond incremental policy changes to alter energy systems, economic models, and global governance frameworks.

Yadav reiterated India’s commitment to principles such as common but differentiated responsibilities and climate justice, which he described as foundations of durable cooperation. His comments come in the wake of the United States’ withdrawal from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, raising concerns about the future of global climate efforts.

Bharrat Jagdeo, Vice President of Guyana, also addressed the conference, highlighting the challenges posed by the absence of the US in achieving climate goals. Siddharth Sharma, CEO of Tata Trusts, pointed out the inequities in global narratives around emissions and economic development, stressing the need for equitable solutions.
