India Mauritius deal: India and Mauritius have signed agreements to implement projects under a $680 million economic assistance package from India, as announced on April 9, 2026, by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Port Louis.

The leaders discussed enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including a government-to-government agreement for India to supply oil and gas to Mauritius, aiming to bolster the island nation’s energy security amidst West Asia’s conflicts.

The economic package, initially announced during Ramgoolam’s visit to India in September, includes $25 million in budgetary support and a mix of grants and loans for several projects. Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to developing infrastructure, health, and security in Mauritius.

Eleven community development projects were inaugurated, covering sustainable development, energy, sports, and infrastructure. A notable initiative is the ‘Karmayogi portal’ for training Mauritian civil servants, marking India’s first such governance project abroad.

Additionally, a memorandum of understanding was finalized between India’s University Grants Commission and the Higher Education Commission of Mauritius. The leaders also discussed maritime security and the implications of the West Asia conflict.

Ramgoolam expressed gratitude for India’s support, highlighting the aid as a beacon of hope during challenging times. The collaboration reflects a deepening partnership expected to yield significant benefits in the coming years.
