On March 14, 2026, India inaugurated the upgraded Numaligarh Siliguri Product Pipeline (NSPL) in Guwahati, a significant step in enhancing the energy infrastructure of North-East Energy. The pipeline, managed by Oil India Limited, has increased its capacity from 1.72 MMTPA to 5.5 MMTPA, aligning with the Government of India’s Hydrocarbon Vision 2030.
The project, completed as a brownfield initiative, involved upgrading existing infrastructure, including converting pigging stations into Intermediate Pumping Stations and enhancing facilities at both the Numaligarh Dispatch Terminal and the Siliguri Receipt Terminal. This expansion was achieved at a cost of approximately ₹750 crore, below the approved budget of ₹860 crore, resulting in significant financial savings.
The project not only strengthens petroleum product transportation in the region but also generated substantial employment, with over 4.1 million man-hours of work during its execution phase. This development is expected to boost the local economy and support the expansion of the Numaligarh Refinery from 3.0 MMTPA to 9.0 MMTPA.
Historically, the North-East region has been pivotal in India’s energy strategy, and this pipeline enhancement marks a critical milestone in securing energy resources. As India continues to invest in its energy infrastructure, further projects are anticipated, reinforcing the region’s strategic importance.
