India Oil Reserves: On March 26, 2026, the Indian government disclosed that the nation has a 60-day stockpile of crude oil and fuel, along with 800,000 tonnes of secured LPG supplies. This India oil reserves announcement aims to dispel fears of an energy crisis amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas released these India oil reserves stock details to counteract panic buying and reassure the public. Reports of long queues at petrol stations and LPG distributors had surfaced since the conflict began on February 28.
According to the ministry, India’s total oil stocking capacity is approximately 74 days, with current reserves covering 60 days. This includes crude oil, refined products, and strategic reserves stored in underground caverns. Indian oil companies have secured crude supplies for the next 60 days, and all refineries are operating above 100% capacity, ensuring no supply gap.
Despite disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a significant route for oil imports, India has increased imports from alternative sources to offset any shortfall. The government has secured 800,000 tonnes of LPG, guaranteeing at least one month of uninterrupted supply, with additional procurement in progress.
The government refuted claims that piped natural gas (PNG) is being promoted due to LPG shortages, labeling such assertions as misinformation. It emphasized that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG, and all retail outlets are functioning normally.
State-run oil companies like Hindustan Petroleum and Indian Oil Corporation have confirmed sufficient stock levels, dismissing rumors of shortages. The government has also increased credit limits for petrol pump operators to ease fuel lifting issues in smaller towns.
The ministry has dismissed panic buying as a result of misleading social media campaigns, warning of action against those spreading false claims. It reassured citizens that India’s fuel supply is secure, contrasting the situation with other countries facing fuel rationing.
India maintains nearly two months of assured supply, without the need for emergency measures. The government continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring stability in the energy sector.
