India will officially resume issuing tourist visas to Chinese citizens starting July 24, 2025, marking a major step in repairing strained bilateral relations. This is the first time in five years that Chinese tourists will be allowed entry into India for leisure travel, following a freeze triggered by the deadly Galwan Valley clash in 2020.
The Indian Embassy in Beijing confirmed the move in an official notice, stating that Chinese nationals can now apply online, book appointments, and submit documents at visa centers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.
This policy shift comes after several rounds of diplomatic engagement aimed at de-escalation. After the 2020 border clash, India suspended tourist visas for Chinese citizens and imposed broader restrictions, including on Chinese tech apps and investments. In response, China halted visas for Indian travelers during the COVID-19 pandemic, though student and business visas were gradually restored by 2022.
Tensions between the two nations have started to ease over the past year, helped by high-level discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping, most recently in 2024. In early 2025, both countries also agreed to restart direct flights and reopen the pilgrimage route to Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet, a significant gesture for Indian travelers.
China’s Foreign Ministry has welcomed the decision, calling it a step forward in reviving people-to-people connections. While the 3,800-km border remains unresolved, with ongoing military talks focused on disengagement along the Line of Actual Control, the visa resumption is being viewed as a meaningful diplomatic gesture.
Reactions on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) reflect cautious optimism, with many interpreting the move as part of a broader roadmap to normalize ties. Tourism and cultural exchanges are expected to benefit in the long term, potentially laying the groundwork for deeper trust and cooperation.
