India-Russia Cooperation: On April 3, 2026, Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in key sectors such as energy and fertilisers. The meetings took place in New Delhi, reflecting the strategic importance of India-Russia relations.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the mutual benefits of cooperation in trade, fertilisers, connectivity, and cultural exchanges on social media. He praised the ongoing efforts to implement the agreements reached during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India last December.
External Affairs Minister Jaishankar emphasized the focus on trade, industry, energy, and mobility. He also mentioned exploring new opportunities in technology and critical minerals, underscoring the expanding scope of bilateral relations.
The discussions also covered regional and global issues, including the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Russia’s role as a major energy supplier to India has grown following a recent US waiver on sanctions, allowing India to continue purchasing Russian energy despite geopolitical tensions.
India’s interest in Russian fertilisers has increased due to disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict. Additionally, the Indian government has decided to acquire more S-400 air defence systems from Russia, reflecting their performance in last year’s Operation Sindoor against Pakistan.
Prior to Manturov’s visit, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko held consultations to review bilateral ties. These meetings underscore the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations.
