India Russian Oil Imports: Russia’s Foreign Ministry stated on February 18, 2026, that there is no indication of India altering its stance on purchasing Russian oil, a move deemed beneficial for both nations and crucial for global hydrocarbons market stability. This assertion follows claims by Washington that New Delhi has agreed to cease importing Russian crude.

Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, emphasized in her weekly briefing that India’s procurement of Russian hydrocarbons is advantageous for both countries and supports international energy market stability. Her remarks countered statements by US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who have been vocal about India’s alleged commitment to halting Russian oil imports.

The context includes a recent phone conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump, resulting in a significant reduction of US tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%, including the removal of a 25% tariff imposed last year due to India’s Russian oil purchases.

Despite US claims, India has neither confirmed nor denied any agreement to stop buying Russian oil, reiterating that its energy procurement decisions are guided by national interests. Russia has previously accused the US of employing coercive measures to deter nations from purchasing Russian oil, including tariffs and sanctions.
