The anticipated India-US trade deal has been delayed until a new tariff framework is established, according to Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal. The announcement was made on March 16, 2026, during a trade data briefing in New Delhi.

Agrawal stated that the trade agreement will be finalized once the United States reinstates global tariff rates. This follows a recent US Supreme Court decision that struck down reciprocal tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump.

The Supreme Court’s ruling last month led to a series of executive actions by Trump, including a temporary import surcharge of 15% on goods entering the US. These developments have prompted ongoing negotiations between New Delhi and Washington.

In addition to the US, India is actively negotiating six Free Trade Agreements with countries including Australia, Sri Lanka, and Israel. These efforts are part of India’s broader strategy to expand its global trade partnerships.

The US has also launched a Section 301 investigation into alleged unfair manufacturing practices by India and 15 other economies. This could result in new tariffs or trade restrictions, further complicating the current trade dynamics.
