On April 3, 2026, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh officially commissioned the INS Aridhaman, India’s third indigenous nuclear-powered submarine, into the Indian Navy at Vishakhapatnam. This significant event marks a pivotal advancement in India’s strategic maritime capabilities.
The INS Aridhaman is a part of the Arihant class of nuclear submarines, constructed under Project ATV. The commissioning of this vessel is expected to fortify the Indian Navy’s operational strength and enhance its deterrence capabilities in the region.
In addition to the INS Aridhaman, the frigate Taragiri was also inducted. This development underscores the growing strategic importance of India’s eastern seaboard amid evolving security dynamics and India’s expanding role in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Taragiri, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, is a testament to India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, with over 75% indigenous content. It is equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry including supersonic missiles and advanced anti-submarine warfare systems.
As India continues to bolster its naval forces, the commissioning of these vessels highlights its commitment to becoming a formidable maritime power, poised to safeguard its interests and maintain stability in the Indo-Pacific.
