A new Kabul water supply initiative has been launched in Kabul to address the city’s worsening water shortage. The project, connecting Qargha Dam to a 10,000-cubic-meter reservoir in the Polytechnic area, aims to provide clean drinking water to over 70,000 households. Costing approximately 161 million afghanis, the 11.38-kilometer pipeline, funded by UNICEF, is designed to serve more than 62,200 residents with a reliable water supply.

Demand of Kabul Water Supply

Kabul’s rapid population growth and outdated infrastructure have severely limited water access, forcing many residents to rely on contaminated sources or costly private vendors. The initiative, using 450mm pipes for efficient distribution, seeks to reduce health risks from waterborne diseases, particularly among children. Afghan Water Supply and Sewerage Corporation officials stated that the project is part of wider efforts to enhance urban services. Plans are also in place to divert the Panjshir River to Kabul, spanning over 200 kilometers, to further strengthen the city’s water resources. However, experts stress that sustained maintenance and additional investments are necessary to ensure long-term access to safe water for Kabul’s expanding population.
