On July 31, 2025, heavy monsoon rains triggered a series of deadly roof collapse across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to three others in the districts of Lakki Marwat, Bannu, and Tank.

Series of Roof Collapse

In Sarai Naurang, Lakki Marwat, a roof collapse killed two women and a 15-year-old boy. Rescue 1122 teams responded swiftly, recovering the bodies and transporting them to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital.

In Bannu’s Faqirabad Chowk, a home’s roof gave way during the downpour, injuring two people, including a child. Both were given first aid on-site and later shifted to a local hospital. In Tank, a 35-year-old man sustained serious injuries in a similar incident and was rushed to District Headquarters Hospital.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department had issued warnings of heavy rainfall through July 31, prompting the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to advise local governments to stay on alert, especially in areas with mud houses and weak infrastructure. Despite these warnings, the collapses point to the lack of structural resilience in many rural homes.

Since late June, 234 deaths have been recorded across Pakistan due to monsoon-related incidents, with nearly half of the victims being children, according to national disaster authorities. Flash floods, landslides, and building collapses have become frequent during the monsoon season, which runs from June to September.

Recent social media posts on X (formerly Twitter) show growing frustration among citizens, calling for urgent infrastructure upgrades and better disaster preparedness, especially in high-risk provinces like KP.

Rescue Efforts

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams having already evacuated 160 stranded tourists in Naran and 250 others from the Babusar Highway this week alone.
