Maulana Fazl Promises Party Support to Protect Traders from Shop Demolitions

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), has pledged his party’s backing to traders facing the potential demolition of over 7,000 shops on Circular Road in Lahore. The proposed demolitions are part of the Punjab government’s Lahore Authority for Heritage Revital Program, which aims to restore the historic character of the old city. During a meeting with the Joint Action Committee of Circular Road traders, Fazl expressed solidarity and promised to organize an all-parties conference to address the issue.

The traders, represented by various market associations, voiced concerns about the economic fallout from the demolitions, which could affect thousands of families, including shopkeepers, workers, and supply chain participants. They highlighted their role in revitalizing Circular Road through personal investments, arguing that the demolitions would disrupt livelihoods and exacerbate poverty amid Pakistan’s ongoing economic challenges. Fazl echoed these sentiments, criticizing government policies for increasing financial strain on citizens.

The JUI-F leader directed his party to send a delegation to further engage with the traders and plan a course of action. The business community has also appealed to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, warning that the demolitions could harm the national economy. Posts on X reflect similar sentiments, with traders expressing alarm over the potential loss of shops, homes, and mosques in the area.

The situation remains tense as traders await government response, with many hoping for a resolution that preserves their livelihoods while respecting the city’s heritage goals.
