Karachi, Pakistan’s bustling metropolis, welcomed much-needed rain on Tuesday morning, offering respite from the scorching heat. However, the monsoon showers also brought challenges, including widespread power outages and traffic disruptions across the city, as roads became waterlogged.
Monsoon Rain in Karachi
The rain in Karachi, which began early on 19 August 2025, transformed the city’s weather, bringing cooler temperatures and a sense of relief for residents weary of the relentless heat. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported a minimum temperature of 28°C with humidity levels reaching 85%, creating a refreshing atmosphere. Yet, the joy of the monsoon was tempered by significant disruptions, as the city’s infrastructure struggled to cope with the downpour.
According to the PMD, intermittent rain is expected to continue throughout the day, affecting not only Karachi but also other parts of Sindh, including Tharparkar, Umarkot, Mithi, Thatta, Hyderabad, Badin, Dadu, Khairpur, Nausharo Feroze, Larkana, Jacobabad, Sukkur, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sanghar, Islamkot, Nagarparkar, and Mirpur Khas. The forecast highlights the widespread impact of the monsoon system across the province.
Flash Floods and Traffic Disruptions Grip the City
The heavy rainfall led to waterlogging on major roads, including Sharea Faisal and the National Highway, causing severe traffic slowdowns. Karachi Traffic Police issued an advisory at 8:11 AM, urging citizens to take precautions such as avoiding sudden braking, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, and driving at reduced speeds to navigate slippery roads safely. Motorists and pedestrians faced significant challenges, with many struggling to reach their destinations amidst the chaos.
The threat of flash floods loomed large, as low-lying areas became inundated. Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah directed the district administration, Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), health department, and Rescue 1122 to remain on high alert. Immediate measures were ordered to drain rainwater and ensure coordination with the PMD and Sindh PDMA to monitor the evolving situation.
Power Outages Add to Residents’ Woes
Alongside the rainfall, Karachi experienced widespread power outages, leaving many households and businesses in the dark. The combination of rain in Karachi and strained infrastructure highlighted the city’s ongoing challenges in managing essential services during the monsoon season. Residents expressed frustration over the recurring issue, which has become a hallmark of the city’s rainy season, exacerbating the difficulties caused by flooded roads.
The authorities are working to restore power and clear waterlogged areas, but the disruptions have underscored the need for long-term solutions to Karachi’s infrastructure woes. Past monsoon seasons have exposed similar vulnerabilities, with flash floods and power outages disrupting daily life and causing significant economic losses.

The PMD’s advisory serves as a reminder for residents to stay vigilant and prepared for adverse weather conditions. The city’s administration has been urged to prioritise drainage systems and infrastructure upgrades to mitigate the impact of future rainfall.
