Pak-Afghan Peace Jirga: A significant peace jirga between Pakistan and Afghanistan is scheduled to take place in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on March 31, 2026. The event aims to establish a framework for peace and dialogue amid rising tensions between the two nations.
Arbab Shezad Khan, former chief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and head of Aspire-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, announced the jirga alongside Haji Sohrab Ali Khan of the Qaumi Islahi Tehreek. The initiative comes as Pakistan continues Operation Ghazab lil-Haq against terrorist networks in Afghanistan.
The operation began in response to unprovoked aggression by the Afghan Taliban regime along the border. The jirga will see participation from political figures, tribal elders, religious leaders, and members of civil society, media, and business communities.
The peace jirga aims to promote mutual respect, trust-building, and serious negotiations for lasting peace, with a joint declaration to be issued to both governments. The need for dialogue is urgent given the severe tensions following recent border conflicts.
Pakistan’s retaliatory actions were triggered by suicide bombings traced back to Afghanistan, reigniting tensions months after a ceasefire agreement mediated by Doha and Turkiye in October 2025. The agreement called for an end to terrorism from Afghan soil.
Future peace efforts include additional jirgas in Quetta and other areas, with calls for an immediate ceasefire and diplomatic resolutions. The ongoing dialogue is crucial for regional stability and peace.
